Woah! This book is totally crazy and I bloody love it! It’s an absolute rollercoaster from start to finish, with so many twists and turns, you’ll end up with whiplash! The story lines weave together perfectly and the characters are intricate and brilliantly thought out.
Karly Winters has waited ten long years to have the man of her dreams, the handsome but duplicitous Jacob Cruthers. From her home in Glasgow she pines for the Londoner who casually keeps her dangling, never with a thought of giving her what she wants and never with any intention of leaving his wife.
For her part, Karly has no intention of being second best any longer and she hatches an artful plan of devious intent that she is certain will work in her favor. Now, embarking on her dangerous game of high stakes, she is all too aware that someone is likely to get hurt. But for the winner, the prize will be incalculable.
But Karly hasn’t reckoned for new and equally underhanded forces that are at work. Lurking in the shadows are others, with their own agendas to follow and equally ruthless in their objectives.
With various factions hurtling towards a confrontation that none of them saw coming, someone is going to pay the price of infatuation.
“Karly, would you mind helping me clear this mess up?”
I could not put this book down, it was a page-turner, un-put-downable and any other cliche to describe a truly great book but this thriller was, quite literally, thrilling. I had gone off domestic thrillers a littel bit, they were all starting to be a bit same-y but this one is bold, fresh and unlike anything else I’ve read. The story is in a few parts, told by different characters’ perspectives. The fact that Paula has written the book from multiple perspectives and woven storylines within storylines is phenomenal! She must have had a huge corkboard with red string and pins all over it to keep track of who said what and who was where.
The main ‘twist’, I did guess but everything else from thereonin was a complete surprise and that I just loved. I think Paula knew you’d guess one twist so threw more at you to confuse you. Karly is almost unlikeable, she is at worst seriously delusional and at best a hapless romantic. I won’t spoil it but there are other characters who are just as deluded and at least one that is slightly psychotic! Paula has taken a good plot about a cheating man and made it great.
“Such a waster, all that beauty.”
An amazing, thrilling take on a classic genre. This is a breathtaking debut.
